For those of you who know me well, you already know just by reading the title that there is probably a small vein pulsing right now somewhere on my forehead! :)
The first time I ever saw the name "Anthurium Ace Of Spades (Tezula Dark Form)" I just about had a heart attack. I was certainly very flattered that the internet chose to name the plant the way they did but I did not like some of the misinformation which came afterwards.
The story of Anthurium Ace of Spades has been told a thousand times, and I am certainly not going to echo it, I am only going to highlight on a few key points.
We did not create Anthurium Ace Of Spades, all credit for the naming and popularization of this amazing plant goes to our partners at Silver Krome Gardens. One day, Bill and I were walking through the greenhouse when we came upon the Anthurium Ace of Spades section and I casually said to Bill, "There is so much variation in the color, I really think I only want to focus on the dark forms"....... it is as simple as that! It is no secret when you set seed on Ace Of Spades especially if it is a selfing, only a very small percentage of those seeds carry the dark gene while all the others are a plain green, and the dark leaves are just absolutely gorgeous! I decided right there and then I would only be selling the dark forms of Anthurium Ace Of Spades as thats the color form I thought was the prettiest. Apparently so did the rest of the world and within a short time we were sold out.
The only thing Tezula can take credit for with regards to the Internet Issued name "Tezula Dark Form" is our implementation of a very strict color grading system.
So why am I writing this article now? I was going through all my old photos this morning looking for a completely unrelated photo, when I came across the original photo of the AOS plant that I used as my "template" so to speak for all future plants that we labelled as "Dark Form." If the plant was the same color as the plant in the photo or darker, it was classified as a dark form and sold as such, but only as "Dark Form" and never "Tezula Dark Form" which the internet adopted and ran with.
Does light determine just how dark a plants leaf will get, yes, it absolutely does. The light conditions these plants were growing in was considerably brighter than most indoor growers use today so I am really hoping there are some incredibly dark AOS out there floating around.
