Mix #19 is a 100% mineral growing medium formulated for PON and semi-hydroponic growing systems, combining durable porous minerals to provide substantial root-zone aeration, moisture distribution and long-lasting physical structure.
Pumice creates the primary porous mineral framework, providing substantial air space while retaining moisture within its internal pores. Lava rock contributes additional durable porous structure and helps maintain rapid drainage throughout the growing medium.
A substantial proportion of zeolite distinguishes our PON+ formula. Zeolite has significant cation-exchange capacity, allowing it to retain exchangeable nutrient ions while also contributing to moisture buffering within the substrate.
Together, these components create a highly aerated, fast-draining and strongly wicking mineral substrate designed to maintain its physical structure over extended use.
Mix #19 can be used with a wide variety of plants suited to mineral and semi-hydro culture, including:
Aroids • Hoya • Orchids • Begonias • Gesneriads • Tropical Plants
It can be used in appropriate self-watering, reservoir and conventional container systems.
Because container design, reservoir height, environmental conditions and individual plant requirements affect moisture availability, establish and maintain the watering or reservoir system appropriate for the particular plant and container.
Mix #19 contains no bark, peat, coconut coir or other organic growing-media components.
Unlike organic components, its mineral ingredients do not decompose in the same manner, allowing the physical structure of the substrate to remain stable over extended use.
Repot when the plant has outgrown its container, the root system requires attention, or a change in growing system is desired.
Because Mix #19 is composed entirely of durable mineral components, repotting is generally determined by the condition of the plant, roots and container system rather than decomposition of the growing media.
1. Rinse
Rinse Mix #19 thoroughly with clean water before use to remove loose mineral dust and fines.
2. Prepare the Plant
Carefully remove the plant from its existing container and remove as much deteriorated or incompatible growing media from the root system as appropriate.
Plants transitioning from conventional organic media to PON or semi-hydro culture may experience an adjustment period while the root system adapts to its new growing environment.
3. Inspect the Roots
Inspect the root system and remove dead or damaged roots when appropriate.
4. Select the Container
Choose a clean container or semi-hydroponic system appropriate for the plant, with a drainage or reservoir configuration suited to the intended growing method.
5. Pot the Plant
Position the plant at the appropriate depth and carefully work Mix #19 around the roots without excessive compaction.
6. Establish the Plant
Maintain moisture and nutrition according to the particular plant, container system and stage of root establishment.
