Hoya Potting Mix: The Perfect Balance of Air & Moisture for Hoyas, Epiphytic Plants. 100% Natural and Peat Free (Mix #60)

| /

This mix has been in the making for over a year, and the soil scientist we hired, a retired legend in the industry (you can read more about her on our blog), was just not happy with it.

We got a bit nervous when she told us she wanted to go to Indonesia to see Hoyas growing in the wild. But she lives in Australia, so there wasn't much we could do to stop her.

I was actually expecting an email from her about another potting mix we're working on. So when I opened her this email and saw Hoya Mix, our second most requested mix on record, we were absolutely thrilled.

We immediately whipped up a batch and sent it overnight to a few Hoya growers we trust. Nearly everyone came back with some version of the same reaction:

"Whoa. This just feels right."

Turns out, that trip to Indonesia in the middle of the dry season was the missing piece.

The result is a chunky, highly aerated mix built around the way Hoya roots actually want to grow: with exceptional access to oxygen, rapid drainage, and enough moisture retention to keep roots hydrated without surrounding them with a dense, waterlogged substrate.

And while we designed this mix specifically for Hoya, that doesn't mean Hoyas are the only plants that can thrive in it. In nature, it is nearly impossible to find one plant occupying an environment completely by itself. Other plants grow alongside it because they have adapted to many of the same conditions.

 AIR + WATER

This mix is engineered around a carefully considered balance of air and water, with an emphasis on root production and oxygenation rather than maximum water retention.

We know some Hoya growers prefer bottom watering or self-watering systems. Because this is an intentionally chunky, highly aerated mix, it may not pull and hold water upward as aggressively as a finer substrate.

If you bottom water, we recommend using a physical wick that extends into the mix to help carry moisture toward the center of the root zone. This gives you the benefits of reservoir watering without sacrificing the open structure we specifically wanted for Hoya roots.

BOOSTER PACK
This mix works exceptionally well with our completely natural Booster Pack (myco+ essentials). It is NOT a fertilizer. Instead, it helps bring the mix to life, supporting your plant as it establishes and helping create a better environment for the fertilizer you apply.

Adding the Booster Pack gives your plants an extra helping hand, especially during establishment, but it is absolutely not necessary for success. This mix is designed to perform exceptionally well on its own.
