Hoya roots need moisture. But they also need exceptional access to air.
That balance is what makes a good Hoya mix difficult to get right. Hold too much water and the root zone can remain saturated for too long. Go too far in the other direction and the mix can dry rapidly and unevenly.
We spent more than a year trying to find the balance we wanted.
The result is a chunky, highly aerated mix designed to drain quickly while retaining enough moisture to keep roots hydrated between waterings.
Orchiata, pumice, perlite and charcoal create an open, highly porous structure. Coconut husk and tree fern fiber provide moisture retention without turning the mix into a dense substrate. Activated biochar adds additional porosity and nutrient-holding capacity.
The goal isn't to make a mix that holds as much water as possible.
It's to give Hoya roots air and water at the same time.

Pumice
Adds durable mineral structure and porosity while retaining some moisture within its pores.
Perlite
Creates additional pore space and helps keep the mix open and fast draining.
Coconut Husk
Provides chunky organic structure while retaining moisture within the mix.
Tree Fern Fiber
Adds a fibrous, moisture-retentive component while helping maintain the loose, open structure of the mix.
Activated Biochar
Adds highly porous carbon with nutrient-holding capacity while contributing additional physical structure.
Charcoal
Provides another coarse, porous component that helps maintain an open root zone.
Hoya — from common household varieties to collector species and hybrids.
While we developed this mix specifically for Hoya, that doesn't mean Hoyas are the only plants that can thrive in it.
In nature, it is nearly impossible to find one plant occupying an environment completely by itself. Other plants grow alongside it because they have adapted to many of the same conditions.
Plants that prefer a chunky, fast-draining and highly aerated root zone may feel right at home here too.
This mix deliberately favors aeration and drainage over maximum water retention.
Because of its chunky, open structure, it does not naturally wick water upward as aggressively as a finer substrate.
If you top-water, that's unlikely to matter.
If you bottom-water or use a self-watering reservoir, we recommend using a physical wick that extends into the mix. This helps carry moisture toward the center of the root zone while preserving the open structure we specifically wanted for Hoya roots.
How quickly the mix dries will depend heavily on your growing conditions, including temperature, humidity, airflow, light, container size and the size of the plant.
Rather than watering on a fixed schedule, check the mix and your plant and water according to your individual growing conditions.
The Hoya Mix is complete and ready to use exactly as it comes from the bag.

It is not a fertilizer and does not replace your normal fertilizing program.
The Booster Pack is completely optional. This mix was formulated to perform exceptionally well on its own.
This mix has been in the making for over a year.
Not because we couldn't make a Hoya mix.
Because our soil scientist wouldn't let us release one.
We hired a retired soil scientist — something of a legend in the industry, with more than 60 years of experience — to help us develop our mixes. You can read more about her on our blog.
And no matter how many versions of the Hoya mix we worked through, she just wasn't happy with it.
Then she told us she wanted to go to Indonesia to see Hoyas growing in the wild.
We got a little nervous.
But she lives in Australia, so there wasn't much we could do to stop her.
A while later, I was actually expecting an email from her about an entirely different potting mix we're working on.
Then her email arrived.
Hoya Mix.
Our second most-requested mix on record.
We were absolutely thrilled.
It turns out that trip to Indonesia — in the middle of the dry season — was the missing piece.
We immediately whipped up a batch and overnighted it to a handful of Hoya growers we trust.
Nearly everyone came back with some version of the same reaction:
“Whoa. This just feels right.”
And that's when we knew we finally had it.
