Chunky structure. Excellent aeration. Balanced moisture. Built for Philodendrons.
NEW AROID SERIES
PLEASE NOTE: While Mix #5 was formulated first and foremost for Philodendrons, its balanced combination of aeration, drainage, and moisture retention also makes it suitable for many other aroids and tropical plants with similar growing requirements. Don't let the name limit your imagination!
Not all Philodendrons grow the same way, but one thing is certain: their roots need more than just water. They need access to oxygen, too.
Our Philodendron Mix #5 was developed to provide a balance between aeration, effective drainage, and moisture retention, without relying on a conventional, fine-textured potting soil.
The result is a chunky, soilless growing medium that combines premium Orchiata bark, coconut coir, perlite, coconut husk, and tree fern fiber, with smaller additions of worm castings and charged biochar.
The goal isn't simply to keep your Philodendron alive. It's to provide the root environment it needs to become a spectacular specimen.
Philodendrons are remarkably diverse. Some climb trees, others creep across the forest floor, and still others develop into impressive self-heading specimens.
Their growing habits may differ, but successful cultivation depends heavily on maintaining an appropriate balance between moisture and oxygen around the roots.
Too much water held in a poorly aerated substrate can create problems. Conversely, a substrate that dries excessively quickly may make maintaining consistent moisture unnecessarily difficult.
Mix #5 was developed with that balance in mind.
The larger particles provide structure and drainage, while coconut coir, coconut husk, and tree fern fiber help retain useful moisture between waterings.
This makes Mix #5 a versatile option for many established Philodendrons, particularly when matched with appropriate watering practices and growing conditions.
Excellent Root-Zone Aeration
Orchiata Power bark, medium coconut husk, and 3–6 mm perlite help maintain an open structure that encourages gas exchange within the growing medium.
Balanced Moisture Retention
Coconut coir provides a moisture-retentive foundation, complemented by coconut husk and fluffy tree fern fiber. The objective is to retain useful moisture without sacrificing the benefits of a chunky substrate.
Effective Drainage
The combination of coarse organic particles and perlite allows excess water to drain through the medium when used in a container with adequate drainage.
Longer-Lasting Structure
Orchiata bark and perlite contribute structural durability, helping the blend resist the rapid loss of air space associated with some finer organic growing media. Organic components will still gradually decompose over time.
A Little Nutritional Support
Worm castings contribute organic matter and modest nutrient content, while charged biochar adds a porous, carbon-rich component with potential nutrient-holding benefits. Neither replaces a suitable fertilization program.

We use seven carefully selected ingredients:
No peat moss. No conventional garden soil. Just a carefully balanced combination of organic and mineral growing media.
Mix #5 is designed primarily for established Philodendrons, including many popular climbing, crawling, and self-heading varieties.
Climbing Philodendrons
Crawling Philodendrons
These plants may require different container shapes and moisture management than climbing varieties.
Self-Heading Philodendrons
Suitability depends on plant maturity, pot size, watering practices, and environmental conditions. No single substrate is ideal for every Philodendron in every growing environment.
Although developed first and foremost for Philodendrons, Mix #5 may also be suitable for established plants from other aroid genera, including:
As always, consider the individual plant's requirements rather than assuming that all aroids prefer identical growing conditions.
Mix #5 is designed to retain useful moisture while allowing excess water to drain away.
Water thoroughly, allowing water to pass through the substrate and out of the container's drainage holes.
Before watering again, check the moisture within the root zone rather than relying on a fixed schedule.
How quickly the mix dries will depend on your growing environment, including temperature, humidity, airflow, light levels, container size, and plant maturity.
Remember: A well-draining mix isn't necessarily a dry mix. Good drainage and moisture retention can coexist when the ingredients are appropriately balanced.
We developed this formulation primarily for established Philodendrons that benefit from an open, structured growing medium with meaningful moisture retention.
Very young seedlings, newly rooted cuttings, or plants with unusually specialized moisture requirements may benefit from a different formulation.
And while Mix #5 provides a useful balance of physical properties, successful growing still depends on appropriate watering, nutrition, light, and environmental conditions.
An optional Booster Pack is available for growers who prefer additional amendments. If selected, blend the booster thoroughly into the substrate before potting.
Every batch of Mix #5 is handcrafted in small quantities using carefully selected ingredients.
We don't believe the best growing medium is necessarily the chunkiest, the most moisture-retentive, or the fastest-draining.
We believe it's the one that provides the right balance for the plants we're growing.
Happy Planting!
