This size is perfect for smaller plants and plants in pots up to 6". Some growers do use this for plants in larger pots but we have never experimented with it in larger pots.
Daltons, formerly known as Orchiata Pine Bark is 100% pure Pinus radiata, not a blend like so many other brands out there to bring costs down. Pinus radiata is by far the best pine bark there is on the market at the moment and in the 35 years we have been growing orchids and aroids, we have tried a lot of bark!
Isn't all pine bark the same?
I wish I could say yes, but the answer is a resounding NO!. New Zealand Pinus radiata produces a much thicker, harder and structurally sound material ideal for potting and repotting that breaks down much slower than pine bark grown in other localities. Orchiata bark is also allowed to age naturally which results in an even stronger nugget which does not break down as fast as regular bark, most of which is processed while still “wet” The biggest difference between Daltons bark and other "bargain" bark is the way the nuggets absorb water. Where un-aged bark (nearly all other bark on the market) allows water to permeate to the center of the nugget where it takes much longer to dry out and allows the nugget to decompose faster, only the exterior surface of Daltons bark absorbs water while the center remains dry. This significantly improves the important wet-dry cycle needed by nearly all plants.
Orchiata is also coated with Dolomite, which is a natural mineral that contains calcium and magnesium. Research shows dolomite addition to substrates is very beneficial to plants. Dolomite is added to Orchiata to:
#1 - Stabilize the substrate by increasing the pH to within a range of 5.5 to 6.5 which is ideal for plants
#2 - Prevents salt accumulation
#3 - Provide the minerals calcium and magnesium, which provides a much needed boost to plants recently repotted.
All Orchiata bark is also sustainably harvested.
We have been using Orchiata in our private collection for decades, the stuff is just pure magic!
