Tropical Houseplant Mix – Chunky, Airy & Moisture-Balanced (Mix #6)

| /

INDOOR GROWING SERIES: HOUSEPLANTS: CHUNKY POTTING MIX #6

Chunky texture. Balanced aeration. Moisture where your houseplants need it.

Not every houseplant wants to live in an ultra-fast-drying orchid mix, and not every grower wants a potting mix that looks like plain old dirt! Mix #6 was developed for established indoor tropical plants that appreciate a combination of coarse structure, useful air space, and more consistent moisture.

At first glance, this looks like a chunky mix—and it is! But coconut coir and worm castings sit among the larger coconut husk, perlite and lava rock particles, helping the substrate hold moisture between waterings. Chunky doesn't automatically mean fast drying.

Think of it as our forest-floor-inspired houseplant blend: a practical balance of structure and moisture retention for indoor growing, rather than a deliberately dry, epiphyte-focused formula.

WHAT'S IN THE BAG

Coconut Husk
Provides chunky organic structure and holds moisture within the husk pieces.

Coconut Coir
Helps retain and distribute moisture through the mix.

Perlite
Adds lightweight structure and contributes to drainage and aeration.

Lava Rock
Provides durable mineral particles that help maintain physical structure.

Charcoal
Adds additional coarse particles to the blend.

Activated Biochar
Contributes porous carbon with nutrient-holding potential.

Worm Castings
Add organic matter and a modest nutrient contribution while also increasing moisture retention.

WHICH HOUSEPLANTS CAN GROW IN MIX #6?

Looking for a chunky potting mix for indoor plants that holds useful moisture without looking or behaving like a dense, fine-textured potting soil? Mix #6 is designed for established tropical foliage plants whose roots benefit from a balance of moisture retention, drainage and aeration.

Excellent candidates to consider:

  • Prayer plants and relatives: Calathea, Goeppertia, Maranta, Ctenanthe and Stromanthe.
  • Peace lilies: Spathiphyllum.
  • Chinese evergreens: Aglaonema.
  • Dumb canes: Dieffenbachia.
  • Arrowhead plants: Syngonium.
  • Indoor palms: Chamaedorea (parlor palm), Rhapis (lady palm), Howea forsteriana (Kentia palm) and Dypsis lutescens (areca palm), with watering adjusted to the species.
  • Popular tropical foliage: Dracaena, Cordyline and Schefflera (umbrella plant).
  • Ficus: Ficus elastica (rubber plant), Ficus lyrata (fiddle-leaf fig) and Ficus benjamina (weeping fig), where pot size and watering are managed appropriately.

Also potentially suitable, depending on your growing conditions:

  • Philodendron: especially established self-heading types such as 'Birkin', 'Imperial Green' and 'Rojo Congo'.
  • Pothos and related vines: Epipremnum aureum (golden pothos), Epipremnum pinnatum and Scindapsus.
  • Monstera: established Monstera deliciosa and some other Monstera grown with appropriate watering.
  • Alocasia and Colocasia: established plants in warm, adequately lit conditions; individual species and growing setups vary considerably.
  • Flowering Anthurium: some Anthurium andraeanum and A. scherzerianum hybrids, where the mix dries appropriately for the plant.

Important: This is a guide to potential compatibility, not a promise that every species, cultivar or plant size within these groups will thrive in the same substrate. Pot dimensions, drainage, light, temperature, humidity, airflow and watering technique all matter. For succulents, cacti, plants needing a particularly rapid dry-down, or epiphytic orchids requiring a much more open medium, choose a more specialized mix.

WHY CHOOSE THIS CHUNKY HOUSEPLANT SOIL?

  • Visible chunky texture: coconut husk, perlite and lava rock give the mix structure.
  • Moisture-balanced formulation: coconut coir and worm castings help retain moisture between waterings.
  • Designed for indoor tropical foliage: an alternative to both fine-textured general potting soil and extremely fast-drying orchid mixes.
  • Peat-free ingredients: formulated with coconut products, mineral components, charcoal, biochar and worm castings rather than peat moss.
  • Hand-blended to order: prepared by Tezula in small batches.

HOW THIS MIX BEHAVES

It's chunkier than a conventional fine potting soil, but it retains more moisture than its appearance might suggest.

The coconut husk, perlite and lava rock contribute physical structure, while the coir and worm castings help hold moisture. The result is a substrate intended to balance drainage and aeration with the moisture retention many indoor foliage plants appreciate.

Because this is a moisture-retentive blend, it is not designed for the fastest possible dry-down. How long it stays moist will depend on your plant, pot size, temperature, light, humidity and airflow.

WATERING & USE

Water thoroughly, allow excess water to drain, and check the moisture level below the surface before watering again. Let the mix dry to a degree appropriate for the particular plant rather than following a fixed schedule.

Avoid dramatically oversized pots. A large volume of moist substrate surrounding a small root system can take considerably longer to dry. Use a container with adequate drainage, especially in cooler or lower-light conditions.

Mix #6 is formulated for established plants; seedlings and particularly moisture-sensitive plants may need a different medium or watering approach.

OPTIONAL BOOSTER PACK

Mix #6 is a complete growing medium and can be used without additional amendments. An optional Booster Pack may be offered for growers who want additional root-zone ingredients.

The Booster Pack is not a fertilizer and does not replace an appropriate feeding program.

HAND-BLENDED BY TEZULA

Every bag is hand-blended to order using carefully selected ingredients. We make our mixes for growers who want to choose a substrate based on how their plants actually grow—not simply how chunky the bag looks.

USE & RESPONSIBILITY

Plant performance depends on growing conditions and care, including lighting, temperature, humidity, airflow, pot size, nutrition and watering practices. Results will vary from one growing environment to another.

Happy Planting!
