Classic Orchid Mix: Moisture-Retentive & Airy (Mix #1)

Chunky structure. Excellent aeration. Generous moisture buffering. A classic-style orchid blend for growers who want water and air around the roots.

PLEASE NOTE: NOT JUST FOR ORCHIDS

While Mix #1 was formulated first and foremost for moisture-loving orchids that still need air around their roots, its combination of chunky bark, coconut husk, sphagnum moss petals, perlite, and charcoal may also suit other epiphytic or climbing tropical plants with similar growing requirements. Don't let the name limit your imagination!

WHY WE CREATED THIS MIX

Orchid roots need oxygen, but that doesn't mean every orchid—or every growing environment—benefits from a substrate that dries out as quickly as possible. Mix #1 takes a different approach: an open, chunky structure with materials that hold and release moisture between waterings.

Orchiata Power bark and coconut husk form the backbone of this blend. Sphagnum moss petals help retain moisture within the open structure, while Perlite #3 contributes additional air space. Charcoal completes the five-ingredient formula.

The goal is to maintain an airy root environment while providing more moisture buffering than a very lean bark-and-mineral blend. Actual drying time will depend on the plant, pot, and growing conditions.

WHAT MAKES MIX #1 DIFFERENT?

Chunky, Root-Friendly Structure: Orchiata Power and coconut husk provide relatively large particles that help create space around orchid roots.

Moisture Where It's Useful: Sphagnum moss petals and coconut husk retain water within the blend without turning it into a fine-textured potting soil.

Additional Aeration: Perlite #3 helps preserve pore space and supports drainage.

Simple, Five-Ingredient Formula: Only the five components listed below, blended for an open, moisture-buffering texture.

WHAT'S IN THE BAG?

  • Orchiata Power: Premium pine bark that provides the blend's chunky structural framework.
  • Coconut Husk: Coarse organic pieces that contribute both air space and moisture buffering.
  • Sphagnum Moss Petals: Fibrous material that holds moisture in pockets throughout the mix.
  • Perlite #3: Lightweight, chunky mineral particles that support drainage and aeration.
  • Charcoal: A coarse carbon-based component that contributes to the physical texture of the mix.

WHICH ORCHIDS CAN GROW IN MIX #1?

Mix #1 is designed for epiphytic orchids that benefit from a chunky, aerated medium with meaningful moisture retention. Depending on pot size, climate, and watering practices, this may include selected Phalaenopsis, Oncidium-alliance orchids, Dendrobium, and other epiphytic orchids.

Orchid requirements vary enormously, even within a genus. Species that prefer very rapid drying, exceptionally coarse media, or a pronounced seasonal dry rest may need a different blend or a different watering approach.

WHAT ABOUT OTHER TROPICAL PLANTS?

Its open bark-and-husk structure may also suit selected Hoya, climbing Philodendron, Monstera, Rhaphidophora, and other epiphytic or hemiepiphytic tropical plants when their roots and moisture needs are compatible. A plant that prefers a fine, continuously moist terrestrial substrate may be better served by another Tezula mix.

WATERING MIX #1

Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Check the actual moisture within the pot before watering again. The sphagnum and coconut husk components can retain moisture even when the surface looks dry.

Choose a container suited to the plant's root mass. Warmth, light, airflow, humidity, and pot material all influence drying time. Avoid leaving the root zone persistently saturated, especially in cool or low-light conditions.

For orchids that experience a natural seasonal rest, adjust watering to the plant's species-specific growth cycle rather than following the same schedule year-round.

OPTIONAL BOOSTER PACK

Mix #1 is complete and ready to use straight from the bag. Our optional myco+ Essentials Booster Pack is available for growers who want additional root-zone amendments. It is optional and does not replace an appropriate fertilization program.

HAND-BLENDED BY TEZULA

Our growing media are hand-blended in small batches using carefully selected ingredients. We believe roots deserve a thoughtfully constructed growing environment—not another one-size-fits-all bag of potting soil.

Happy Planting!
