Begonias can be frustratingly particular about moisture.
Many don't appreciate drying out completely, but their fine root systems aren't exactly thrilled about sitting in a dense, waterlogged potting soil either.
So Mix #3 was designed around a different kind of balance: persistent, evenly distributed moisture in a remarkably light and fluffy substrate.
Buffered coconut coir creates the primary moisture-holding matrix. Sphagnum moss petals increase moisture retention while keeping the texture soft and fibrous. Perlite creates air space throughout the mix, worm castings add organic matter and a modest nutrient contribution, and activated biochar adds porosity and nutrient-holding capacity.
The result is a mix that stays moist considerably longer than our airier formulations without feeling dense, muddy or heavy.
And there is something else about this one that's difficult to explain until you actually put your hands in it.
It is ridiculously soft and fluffy.
Buffered Coconut Coir
Forms the primary moisture-retentive base of the mix and helps distribute water throughout the root zone.
Sphagnum Moss Petals
Adds additional moisture-holding capacity and a soft, fibrous texture particularly well suited to fine roots.
Triple-Cleaned Perlite
Creates pore space throughout the mix, helping preserve root-zone aeration even while the moisture-retentive components remain hydrated.
Worm Castings
Adds organic matter and a mild source of plant nutrients.
Activated Biochar
Adds highly porous carbon with nutrient-holding capacity while contributing additional physical structure.
Begonias, particularly Rex, Angel Wing, Cane and Rhizomatous Begonias.
It can also be an excellent choice for other fine-rooted tropical plants that appreciate consistent moisture, including:
Calathea & Maranta
Ferns
Fittonia
Peace Lilies
Terrestrial Orchids
Seedlings & Propagations
It may also work well for moisture-loving Alocasia, Syngonium, Anthurium and Philodendron, particularly in growing conditions where faster-draining mixes dry too quickly.
This is intentionally one of our more moisture-retentive mixes.
It is designed for plants that genuinely prefer consistent moisture, not as a way to water less frequently when growing plants that naturally prefer a substantial dry-down.
Because Mix #3 retains considerably more water than our chunkier formulations, do not overpot. Choose a container appropriate for the existing root mass rather than surrounding a small plant with a large volume of wet substrate.
Allow the surface to begin drying before watering again.
Temperature matters too. A plant actively growing in a warm, bright environment can use water very differently from the same plant sitting in cool, low-light conditions.
Warm + Moist can work beautifully. Cold + Wet is a very different equation.
Its strong natural wicking ability also makes Mix #3 particularly well suited to growers using bottom-watering or self-watering systems.
The Begonia Mix is complete and ready to use exactly as it comes from the bag.
For growers who want additional root-zone amendments, we also offer our optional myco+ Essentials Booster Pack.
It is not a fertilizer and does not replace your normal fertilizing program.
The Booster Pack is completely optional. Mix #3 was formulated to perform exceptionally well on its own.

Plant performance depends on environment and care. While our mixes are professional-grade growing media, results will vary based on your conditions, including lighting, temperature, humidity, airflow, container choice and individual watering habits.
By choosing one of our professionally handcrafted mixes, you're supporting a small business genuinely obsessed with plant health.
Every bag is hand-blended because we believe your plants deserve better than another generic, mass-produced potting mix.
If your Begonias love it as much as we love putting our hands in it, please consider leaving us a review. It helps our small business more than you know.
