Mix #119 combines two characteristics that rarely coexist this well: high moisture retention and exceptional aeration.
Its highly porous structure holds and distributes moisture while maintaining tremendous air space around the roots. Unlike traditional bark-based substrates, nothing in this mix will meaningfully decompose before your plant is due for repotting.

Rockwool has been used by commercial orchid growers for decades, yet surprisingly never gained the same following among Aroid growers.
The formula for #119 came from friends of ours who are among the largest commercial orchid growers in Australia. Naturally, we handed it to Dr. Y to see what she would change.
She said there was nothing to improve.
For Dr. Y, that's incredibly unusual.
The biggest advantage is longevity. There is no pine bark to gradually rot, break down and change the structure of the mix. You'll eventually need to repot because your plant needs it, but deteriorating potting media shouldn't be the reason.
And the wildcard? This is what we grew our Hoyas in before Dr. Y developed Hoya Mix #60. They absolutely thrived in it.
Dr. Y did give us two pieces of advice: watch your watering at first, and don't forget to feed.
If you've never grown in rockwool before, there can be a small learning curve. Its open appearance can be deceptive because it can retain substantial moisture while maintaining excellent aeration.
#119 provides essentially no built-in nutrition, so regular feeding is important. The advantage is control: you decide what your plants receive through your feeding program rather than relying on nutrients contained within the substrate.
Ideal for orchids, particularly growers looking for a long-lasting alternative to bark. Also excellent for Hoyas and other epiphytic or semi-epiphytic plants with similar root requirements.

This mix works exceptionally well with our completely natural Booster Pack (Myco+ Essentials). It is NOT a fertilizer. Instead, it helps bring the mix to life, supporting your plant as it establishes and helping create a better environment for the fertilizer you apply.
Adding the Booster Pack gives your plants an extra helping hand, especially during establishment, but it is absolutely not necessary for success. This mix is designed to perform exceptionally well on its own.
